Week 11: What I learned from Twitter and Hashtags
Hi guys, this week I chose to do a review over a website my professor had found called 'Ditch That Textbook'. This website has a list of 50 people and hashtags that you must follow on twitter if you have one. I first off have to say that this list of people and hashtags is amazing. I chose to look at three particular people and their twitter feed to find some resources that I had no clue about, and let me tell you, I am glad I did. The three people I have chosen to pick are Kasey Bell, Caitlin Tucker, and Jennifer Gonzales. All three of these women have extraordinary resources on their twitter feed but I have limited it down to one from each, and now I am going to talk about each of those individually.
Kasey Bell is the mastermind behind the blog called 'shakeuplearning'. Is the specific tweet pictured above, Kasey talks about the resource Called TED-Ed! This specific resource links to a blog that talks about how your students can use TED-Ed to learn about STEM concepts with real-world relevance. Ted talks are very popular in the educational world as we use them to learn concepts in a quick and easy technology inverted way. Once a student has found a ted talk they want to use, they can use TED-Ed to help create a lesson with questions, discussion prompts, and additional resources. Below is an example of a TED-Ed that a student named Mel Rosenberg created called 'What causes Cavities'.
I will now be talking about Caitlin Tucker's twitter and her resources she provided that I want to share with you all. This particular teacher adds resources literally all the time. The one I want to share with you is a specific post I found on her blog. This post is called 'Five Strategies to Help you Rethink Research'. In this post, Catlin talks about 'A google a day', 'Got Credibility', 'Infographics', 'Crowdsourcing', and 'Instagram Scavenger Hunts'. I am going to talk particularly about the info graphics. Catlin talks about her thoughts on using infographics in the classroom and how she likes to do so. She gives three infographic tools that can be used. These resources are called Easel.ly, Piktochart, and Infogr.am. Below is a couple pictures of Catlin's twitter bio and specific tweet that includes the resource:
Finally, I will be talking about my last inspiration. Jennifer Gonzalez is a teacher who is a pro at using pedagogy. Jessica is also a professional at tweeting her thoughts and wonderful resources on twitter. The resource I chose to talk about is called 'Introducing the teacher's guide to teach'. This particular resource is a book written by Jessica Gonzalez herself. It can be bought on 'Teacher's pay Teacher's' for $20. This wonderful book is here to help educators get used to technology in the classroom and feel comfortable with it. I will put a video below to give you a closer look at this resource. It is a video of Jessica herself talking about the book. Overall, this resource is a wonderful help for teachers integrating technology in their personal classroom. The book has particular applications and descriptions of how to use it correctly. Overall, this is a great resource. Make sure you follow her on twitter and catch up on her blog every once in awhile.
I also chose to look at a hashtag I found on 'Ditch That Textbook'. The one I chose to look into is called #ditchbook. With this hashtag, I looked through twitter an found 3 resources that included this hashtag. The first one I am going to talk about is called 'Sketcho Frenzy'. Sketcho Frenzy talks about the importances of visual note taking and how they can influence your education. The second resaource I found using #ditchbook is called a blog called 'Five Ways Tech Can Truly Improve Learning'. This blog gives examples on how to incorporate technology into your classroom successfully. Finally, I want to talk about a resource I found called 'Teaching, Tech, and Twitter'. This blog gives examples on how to gamify your STEM labs. It gives personal examples on how to do so and ideas to boost your thinking. Go give these resources a look or explore the #hashtag for more great educational ideas.
Okay guys, that's all I have for this weeks review. Please, please, please follow these three wonderful teachers on twitter to see updates on what is being used in the educational field. Have a good week friends.
